I never took my eye of the coverage of the Ryder Cup, Florida/Tennessee nah, North Carolina/VT nope, Falcons/Chiefs LOL, I sat and watched golf all weekend. I was amazed at the ability of these players to sink long putts in clutch situations with the pressure of the whole country on their shoulders. I was also amazed at the sportsmanship of the Europeans (minus Westwood), how they kept their cool with thousands of Americans screaming at them, and cheering all their bad, it was remarkable. I have always liked Sergio Garcia, he has been given a bad rap over here, but he is a great player and he is a great person. He was the first to congratulate the Americans on their first win since 1999. I was very impressed with Sergio.....
In other sports, Georgia rolled, Florida rocks, LSU is better than we thought, the Braves are good at being a spoiler, and the Yellow Jackets are well coached. Derek Jeter sent Yankee Stadium off with a good speech, and the Yankees showed why they are a class organization. The Rays are in the playoffs for the first time, and the Mets have the worst bullpen known to man. The Patriots are human, and Ronnie Brown wasted a lot of points by sitting on most fantasy player's bench. The Falcons won a laugher and the Chiefs, Rams, and Browns are a laughing stock. Florida State needs to find a new offense, and fall weather is awesome. Hope y'all had a great weekend, and I think I am going to ride my club down the first fairway like our countryman Boo Weekley, "that dog will hunt."

I could not have said it better myself - I did not think anyone watched as much sports as I do but I guess you might - I have several TV's on at once as well as pictures in pictures - yankee wrap up was great - very moving - loved old timers telling stories (not so much reggie jackson but then i was never a fan) - the walk around he field was awesome cannot get enough - cant wait for the baseball playoffs
Great winning sports weekend for the state (GT, UGA, Falcons, Braves). Phat Phil is on the hot seat again; 0-4 vs. Gators in the Urban era will not work in Knoxville. AJ Green's coming out party was nice but now the coverage won't be nearly as soft on him for the rest of his career. Tech definitely has something with Paul Johnson. Auburn-LSU was a great game but if I'm an Auburn fan I'm really missing Al Borges.
The Yankees story was overdone, horribly overdone. I understand that the greatest ballplayers EVER played there, but my god, give it a break. Derek Jeter is a douche, the most over-rated player ever. He received credit for what O'Neil and Martinez did for the Yankees. It was awesome to see the old Yankees players together on the feild, but to talk about it as much as the tools at ESPN did was absurd. The Ryder Cup, the Dolphins killing the Pats, the tight baseball races, those should have been the story. Oh and the fact that the the biggest payroll team won't make the playoffs and that the 2 highet payroll teams can't even win their own division... makes you see how special the Braves were back in the day. Congrats US Ryder Cup team. College football still rules, 2nd only to Braves baseball. Good games this weekend.
Wow Matt M., Derek Jeter a douche? Chris Rock said it best when the Yanks got A-rod. "How bad ass do you have to be when your team signs the best SS in baseball, and move him to 3B. Derek Jeter is one of the most well respected athletes ever. He does his job day in and day out. SS is probably the 2nd most important position on the field behind your pitcher. Without Jeter, the Yanks would not have had the success they had in the 90s and early 2000s. Period.
The Pro
SS is important, but you rank it above the catcher!!! Nope, sorry, your dead wrong there. Jeter is a below average defender and yes, was a good hitting shortstop for a couple of years.
They haven't been to the Series since 2003 with the highest payroll in baseball. They won in the late 90s and in 2000. It wasn't only Jeter, though he was the MVP one year. He may be a great leader in the clubhouse, he may not be. Who knows, but he can't even get along with their best player. And how great of a player is he when is is surrounded by the best hitters in baseball his whole career as a singles hitter. He gets nothing but fastballs! Over-rated.
A big league catcher has to be able to do 1 thing, catch or block a baseball. There's maybe 3 Catchers in basball that can actually hit. I think you proved my point... if you have a lineup full of power hitters, the exact person you want setting the table is a singles hitter who puts the ball in play and can drive a gap.
Look at this list of awards:
• 1996: American League Rookie of the Yea
• 2000: All-Star Game Most Valuable Player
• 2000: World Series Most Valuable Player
• 2004: American League Gold Glove at SS
• 2005: American League Gold Glove at SS
• 2006: American League Hank Aaron Award
• 2006: American League Gold Glove at SS
• 2006: American League Silver Slugger
• 2007: American League Silver Slugger
Over-rated? With those accolades? Impossible, but as always man I love your feedback. It's always straight forward! Thanks!
The Pro
You just showed why I said he is over-rated. A singles hitter protected by bashers will be fed fastballs. Nobody wants to walk him when Giambi, or ARod is hitting behind him. He will rake in front of them.
Winning a gold glove, please! David Wright won it last year with close to the worst fielding % of NL 3B (954 and 21 errors). There are stats out there (those difficult fielding stats) that show he (Jeter) has no range and is over-rated in the field. Yes, he hit in the postseason, but so did O'Neil, Posada, Martinez and the great pitchers the Yankees had (Wetteland, Rivera), not to mention a HOF coach.
A catcher has to block and catch a baseball, thats it? Who has the ball as much as the pitcher? Who's defense is the most important on a team? Who manages the pitchers? A good defensive catcher that can throw will keep baserunners timid and close. What can a SS do unless the ball is hit to him?
Jeter blows - but the Yankees are a class act organization and the greatest organization in all of sports. Hands down, no argument.
Its good to debate.
